A well-rounded teacher toolkit needs to be expansive, diverse and dynamic, with both general and specific tools. Whatever the task, there are certain selections of tools that are best for that job, and those are the ones we choose from the toolkit on a daily, lesson-by-lesson basis.

Across this course, we concentrate on the tools that support quality language learning and mathematics teaching. We hope that by the time you exit the course in module 5, you will have acquired a rich and much-expanded tool kit to go forth and do teaching, learning and assessment just that little bit better.

Learning Outcomes

In this course we aim to:
  • Provide the knowledge, understanding and skills to design more effective lessons in literacy and mathematics, whilst following a suggested lesson structure
  • Identify, revise and incorporate 100 effective teaching strategies to deliver lesson content and support learning
  • Promote a quality questioning approach within mathematics and literacy lessons
  • Champion clear learner outcomes and quality learner experiences to be at the heart of lessons
  • Provide a range of strategies and activities that support the development of strong oral language, reading and writing skills
  • Provide a range of strategies and activities that support the development of mathematical skills, concepts and dispositions 
  • Itemise a suite of digital materials and tools that can facilitate planning, classroom management, teaching, learning and assessment in literacy and mathematics


01 - Oral language tools

  • Select and use strong planning, preparation and assessment practices that progress pupils’ learning in language
  • Identify and plan oral language activities that build skills and  that meet  pupils’ learning needs  
  • Motivate their students in learning by providing clear attainable learner outcomes, expressed as WALT, WILF and Feedback loop
  • Use a range of questioning techniques effectively for a variety of purposes including stimulating substantial pupil responses and facilitating deeper engagement with the lesson. 
  • Assess not just knowledge, but also assessment of skills and dispositions
  • Strategically select and use approaches to match the learning objectives of the oral language lesson and meet the learning needs of pupils

02 - Reading tools

  • Engage pupils purposefully in meaningful learning activities in literacy
  • Design and prepare a sequence of learning tasks and activities suitable for the specific learning objectives of the lesson
  • Develop children’s reading comprehension strategies in accordance with the primary school curriculum
  • Strategically select and use approaches to match the learning objective of the reading lesson and meet the learning needs of pupils

03 - Writing tools

  • Develop pupils writing skills in accordance with the primary language curriculum and the writing workshop approach
  • Devise effective vocabulary and spelling building activities that elicit high levels of interest and participation in learning by the pupils.
  • Engage pupils in purposeful and meaningful writing activities
  • Utilise their own subject / pedagogical knowledge to develop a STEAM unit of work that focuses literacy & maths learner outcomes onto a Sustainable Development Goals learner experience

04 - General Maths tools

  • Design and prepare in advance a sequence of learning tasks and activities suitable for the specific learning objectives of the maths lesson
  • Plan for assessing pupils’ attainment of the intended learning objectives of the maths lesson, using both assessment of learning and assessment for learning 
  • Increase pupil overall understanding and attainment in mathematics through the constructivist / Concrete Pictorial Abstract approach to modelling and doing maths.
  • Plan mathematics learner experiences that enable pupils to work both independently and collaboratively in a purposeful manner in a problem-solving environment.
  • Strategically select and use approaches to match the learning objective of the maths  lesson and meet the learning needs of pupils

05 - Maths tech tools

  • Assist pupils to grow as learners through interactions and experiences in mathematics that are challenging and supported
  • Provide students with constructive, developmental oral and written feedback on their work in mathematics based on error analysis
  • Design and prepare learning activities that develop mental arithmetic skills
  • Assess progress and maintain assessment records that are clear, useful and easy to interpret and share
  • Select from and utilise a suite of  virtual  digital manipulatives, tools and objects to build concepts and skills to help meet the learning needs of pupils in language and mathematics
